Hi. I picked up something interesting and decided to post about it -
SpaceX is shifting from a rural satellite internet provider to a full-fledged mainstream mobile network carrier. By acquiring specialized radio frequencies (spectrum), SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile aims to deliver direct-to-phone coverage that works anywhere - including deep indoors.
Big Telecom Deals
To build a mobile network, a company needs a "spectrum" (invisible highway lanes in the air that carry data). Over the last year, SpaceX completed massive deals to buy up these airwaves:
- 2025 (The EchoStar Foundation): SpaceX executed a massive $17 billion deal to secure 65 MHz of nationwide mid-band spectrum from EchoStar. This provided the high-speed data capacity required for standard mobile usage.
- October 6, 2026 (The 15,000 Satellite Approval): The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved SpaceX's request to launch 15,000 next-generation Starlink Mobile "Gen2" satellites. These satellites feature 100x the bandwidth of older models to communicate directly with regular, unmodified smartphones.
- October 8, 2026 (The Grain Management Deal): SpaceX struck an $8 billion deal to buy a nationwide low-band (800 MHz) spectrum portfolio from Grain Management. Low-band signals travel very long distances and penetrate thick walls and buildings. Elon Musk described this as the "last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle" to offer complete phone coverage in America.
Short-Term Impact on Stock Markets
The shockwave from the October 8th deal caused an immediate, dramatic split in the markets on Friday, October 9, 2026:
- 📉 Legacy Telecom Smashed: The "Big Three" U.S. carriers suffered historic single-day losses, wiping out over $50 billion in collective market value. T-Mobile TMUS plunged 13.27%, Verizon VZ dropped 8.75% (its worst day since 2002), and AT&T T slid 9.81%. Global telecom providers in Europe and Australia also plummeted out of fear that regional markets would be disrupted next.
- 📈 Cell Tower Companies Rallied: Even though Starlink operates from space, building a hybrid terrestrial network requires physical equipment. Shares of infrastructure owners like American Tower AMT and Crown Castle CCI surged between 6% and 13% because investors realized SpaceX would need to lease their steel towers to hook up ground networks.
- 🚀 SpaceX Surged: Following its highly publicized June 2026 IPO, SpaceX (SPCX) shares jumped about 4% to 5% over the week, boosting its valuation deep past the $2 trillion mark.
Long-Term Impact on Stock Markets
Over the next few years, Wall Street will adjust to a completely redefined connectivity landscape:
- Gradual Margin Erosion for Legacy Telecom: Institutional analysts (like JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley) emphasize that traditional carriers face limited immediate risk because building out nationwide physical infrastructure takes years. However, over the long term, legacy carriers will lose their ultimate competitive advantage: geographic network coverage. This will slowly erode their premium pricing power and subscriber growth.
- SpaceX Dominance in Space ETFs: As Starlink Mobile goes live, SpaceX will heavily drive major thematic funds. Exchange-traded funds focused on space—such as the Roundhill Space & Technology ETF (MARS) and the VanEck Space ETF (WARP)—are positioned to see long-term compounding growth.
- Hardware and Tech Realignment: A standalone, satellite-backed network means consumer hardware companies like Apple and Samsung will have to adapt their chips to interface seamlessly with Starlink's massive constellation, altering hardware supply chains and creating new market leaders.
Hope this is useful :)
